What are Oregon's rules about scattering cremated remains?
In Oregon, there are few restrictions on scattering ashes, but some guidelines apply. You may scatter on private property with the owner’s permission. Public lands, like state parks or forests, typically require advance approval. Ashes should be scattered discreetly and at least 100 yards from trails, roads, buildings, or waterways. Scattering at sea is permitted outside the 3-mile limit and must be reported to the EPA within 30 days. No markers or publicity are allowed on public lands. Common sense and respect for others are always advised.
Is there any financial assistance available for cremation in Portland?
Several resources may help with cremation costs in Oregon. Social Security offers a one-time $255 death benefit for eligible individuals. Veterans and their dependents may be buried at Willamette National Cemetery free of charge, including a grave marker. If the deceased was affiliated with a federally recognized tribe, tribal organizations may also offer support. It’s best to contact the tribe directly or check with the Oregon Tribal Directory for guidance.
