Do Soon was born on October 31, 1991, in Seoul, South Korea. He moved to the United States as a child and grew up in Houston, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and went on to earn his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University in 2020. Throughout his career, he pursued his interests in science, technology, and biotechnology, spending time at Stanford University and working with companies including Eli Lilly, Inceptive Nucleics, Amazon, and Xaira, as well as consulting with emerging biotechnology companies.
Outside of work, Do Soon enjoyed running, reading, traveling, and exploring the world around him. An avid runner, he was always working toward his next goal, particularly improving his marathon time. He loved exploring Seattle and the surrounding Pacific Northwest, and he approached new interests with curiosity and determination. Whether learning a new home improvement skill for his family's Green Lake house or researching something that caught his attention, he enjoyed the challenge of figuring things out. He also had a lifelong love of animals, especially his dog, Cali, and cats, Harvard and Princeton.
Some of Do Soon's happiest moments were spent with his children. He loved snuggling with them, teaching them new things, especially math, and making up games together. He was always willing to climb through playground structures, take the kids along on stroller runs, or join in whatever activity had captured their interest. Though dinosaurs and trucks were never his personal favorites, he learned all about them because his children loved them. He enjoyed watching the kids play soccer and do karate, working on projects together, and running alongside Alan as he learned to ride his bike and scooter, ready to catch him when he fell. He also happily let his children paint his nails in every color imaginable and wore their colorful creations with pride.
Do Soon married Brennan Kim in Chicago, Illinois, in October 2019. Together, they welcomed three children: Eleanor Ann (2020–2020), Alan Young (2021), and Caroline Iris (2024). He was preceded in death by his daughter Eleanor and is survived by Brennan, Alan, and Caroline.
Do Soon will be remembered for his curiosity, his determination, his love of animals, and the joy he found in playing, learning, and exploring the world with his children.
Do Soon was cremated and will be laid to rest alongside his daughter, Eleanor Ann.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held in Seattle in December 2026, with the date and details to be announced.
