West Linn has no hospital. The nearest is Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center at 1500 Division Street in Oregon City, roughly four miles away straight across the Arch Bridge, with an emergency department staffed around the clock. Its number is 503-656-1631. You will see it called both Willamette Falls Medical Center and Providence Willamette Falls; they are the same hospital.

Legacy Meridian Park at 19300 SW 65th Avenue in Tualatin serves the Stafford and western side of the city, and Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside at 10180 SE Sunnyside Road in Clackamas takes Kaiser members from across the area.

One hospice has a West Linn address: Royal Hospice Care at 18615 Willamette Drive, on Highway 43 through town. Eden Hospice works from Molalla Avenue in Oregon City, Brighton from Tualatin, and Providence and Legacy both cover West Linn from further out.

We collect from all of these, and from private homes and care facilities, at any hour. If your person is on hospice service, their nurse can call us directly.

The county office is close, about two miles across the bridge, but which county you deal with depends on where the death happened rather than where your person lived.

Clackamas County Vital Records is at 2051 Kaen Road, Suite 367, Oregon City, OR 97045, and the number is 503-655-8406. Certified copies are $25.00 each, with no discount for ordering several. The office is open Monday to Thursday, 7:00 to 6:00, and closed on Fridays. In person is often same day, which for a West Linn family is a genuinely short errand. Online ordering runs through Permitium and adds a service fee and card processing on top.

The catch: a death at Providence Willamette Falls is a Clackamas County death and can be handled at that counter. A death at Legacy Meridian Park in Tualatin is a Washington County death, and one at OHSU or Legacy Emanuel is a Multnomah County death. Different office, different form. Clackamas can also only issue within six months of the death; after that it goes to Oregon Health Authority.

We order certificates at $30 each and file the record for you, which includes working out which county you are actually dealing with.

This changed very recently and most sources have not caught up, including Wikipedia. On February 11, 2026, the West Linn Tidings merged with the Lake Oswego Review and the Wilsonville Spokesman to form a single paper called The Review, covering all three cities. The stated reasons were press costs and advertising revenue.

The westlinntidings.com website survives, with its own newsletter and social accounts, and it is still where obituaries are submitted. Use the submission form there or call 503-620-7355. You can paste in something you have written or work through a form and have staff help write it, and up to two photographs are accepted. The notice runs in The Review, on the website and in a daily obituary email. No rate card is published; a representative quotes on length and photographs.

Oregon sets no state law governing where cremated remains may be kept or scattered. Ashes may stay at home, be divided among family members, be buried, or be scattered on private land with the owner’s permission. Scattering on federal land generally requires a permit, and rules differ by agency.

Scattering at sea is available through us for $195.

There is no cemetery inside the West Linn city limits, so this is another errand across the river.

Mountain View Cemetery at 500 Hilda Street in Oregon City is the closest, owned and run by the City of Oregon City, and it takes both burials and cremated remains. The city publishes separate pages for niche burial options and for cemetery pricing, so the figures are public if you look. The number is 503-657-8299.

Willamette National Cemetery at 11800 SE Mount Scott Boulevard, about twenty minutes away, has columbaria with space available, and interment there is free to eligible veterans and their spouses. The number is 503-273-5250. Oswego Pioneer Cemetery at 17401 Stafford Road is the closest ground to the Stafford side of town and is run by a nonprofit association; call before assuming they sell new cremation spaces.

Closer to Portland on Highway 43, Riverview Abbey Mausoleum at 0319 SW Taylors Ferry Road is the natural indoor niche option on that corridor.

We do not sell cemetery property and take no commission on it, so you are free to arrange this directly with whichever cemetery you choose.

A surprising amount of this goes unclaimed, not because families are careless but because no one is obliged to mention it. Here is what to check, roughly in order of how often it applies.

Start with Social Security’s $255 lump-sum death payment. Small, but nobody sends it to you. A surviving spouse claims it; if there is no spouse, a child aged 17 or under, or 18 to 19 and still at school, or disabled before 21. The deadline is two years from the death. Call 1-800-772-1213 between 8:00 and 7:00 on a weekday and ask to apply for the lump-sum death payment. A my Social Security account may let you start it online. In-person visits now need an appointment booked in advance, and the live office list is at ssa.gov/locator. We deliberately do not publish street addresses for these offices, because stale ones send grieving people to locked doors.

If the person was a veteran, start here before anything else. Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mount Scott Boulevard in Portland, is the nearest VA national cemetery, at 503-273-5250. It has space for both casketed and cremated remains. The office is open weekdays 8:00 to 4:30 and the grounds daily from 7:00. From West Linn it is about eleven miles northeast.

What the VA actually provides, in its own words: “a gravesite in any of our national cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, at no cost to the family.” And on cremation specifically, that cremated remains are inurned “in the same manner and with the same honors as casketed remains.” Spouses and dependent children are covered as well, at no cost, with the name inscribed on the veteran’s headstone rather than on one of their own. Note that remarriage after the veteran’s death does not end a surviving spouse’s eligibility. Families assume it does and it does not. At need, call the National Cemetery Scheduling Office on 1-800-535-1117 and fax the discharge papers to 1-866-900-6417. The cemetery itself cannot book it for you.

There is also a cash allowance, separate from the cemetery. For a death not connected to service the VA pays $1,002 as a burial allowance and $1,002 as a plot allowance, current from October 1, 2025, on Form 21P-530EZ, filed within two years of burial. Watch this: the plot allowance disappears if you use a national cemetery, since the plot cost you nothing. It is one or the other. The VA line is 1-800-827-1000.

Your county veteran service office will file the VA paperwork for you, free, and correctly, which is worth more than it sounds. Clackamas County Veteran Services is at 2051 Kaen Road, Suite 281, Oregon City, on 503-650-5631. Oregon City is four miles from West Linn, and they say plainly that they assist with burial and survivor benefits. Open Monday to Thursday, closed Fridays, by appointment. The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs is at 1-800-692-9666.

Where the person was an enrolled tribal member, the tribe is the first call and often the largest single sum available. Two Oregon tribes publish real funeral benefits, and both have Portland offices. Grand Ronde pays the funeral home up to $7,000 with a further $400 toward a reception, covering enrolled members and their spouses, parents and children under 25, and gives tribal cemetery plots to members at no cost; Member Services is 1-800-422-0232 extension 2253, and the Portland office at 4445 SW Barbur Boulevard is 503-879-1881. Siletz provides up to $6,000 in funeral assistance plus a $1,000 death benefit and asks for no formal application, only that the family notify Enrollment; 541-444-2532, or 503-238-1512 for the Portland office at 3220 SW 1st Avenue.

Bureau of Indian Affairs burial assistance of up to $3,500 is separately available to indigent enrolled members through the Northwest Regional Office at 911 NE 11th Avenue, Portland.

Seldom mentioned and worth several thousand dollars: Oregon pays funeral costs where a death was a homicide. The Department of Justice Crime Victims’ Compensation program sends up to $5,000 straight to the funeral provider, and will consider more case by case, alongside crime scene clean-up and grief counseling. Mind the deadlines, which are short: report to police within 72 hours and apply within one year. The number is 1-800-503-7983, or go through the district attorney’s victim assistance office in your county.

This is where Oregon diverges from Washington, and getting it wrong costs families money. None of Multnomah, Washington or Clackamas county operates an indigent cremation program. The help is at state level: the Oregon Indigent Disposition Program at the Oregon Mortuary and Cemetery Board, under ORS 97.170, at 971-673-1504. It is widely misdescribed. The money goes to the funeral establishment as reimbursement, not to the family, and no family can apply to it. It reaches only the unclaimed: the moment someone signs a contract accepting responsibility for the disposition, the person ceases to be indigent in law and the program is closed off. So if money is the obstacle, say so to us before signing anything at all.
