When a veteran passes away, families often wonder what kinds of benefits are available and how they apply to cremation services. While the VA does not cover the cost of cremation itself, there are meaningful honors and assistance available to those who have served.
At Western Cremation Alliance, we proudly assist families in securing these benefits—at no additional cost.
Does the VA Pay for Cremation?
In most cases, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) does not pay for the cremation itself. However, there are several benefits and honors that may apply, including:
- A free government-issued headstone, marker, or medallion
- A burial flag
- Military funeral honors, including a flag-folding ceremony and the playing of Taps
- Interment of cremated remains at a national or state veterans cemetery, often at no cost
Who Qualifies for Veterans Benefits?
To be eligible, the deceased must generally meet the following criteria:
- Honorable discharge from the U.S. military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard)
- Minimum active-duty service requirements (usually 24 months)
- National Guard and Reservists may also be eligible under certain conditions (e.g., activated for federal service)
You’ll need to provide the veteran’s discharge papers (DD214) or equivalent military service record to request benefits.
How to Request Military Funeral Honors
Military funeral honors are available for eligible veterans and include at least two uniformed service members, one of whom represents the veteran’s branch of service.
We assist families in arranging:
- Coordination with the appropriate military honors team
- Scheduling at cemeteries, churches, or private locations
- Delivery of the U.S. burial flag
These honors can be included at a church, community center, or family gathering, even if cremation was chosen.
Burial or Inurnment in a Veterans Cemetery
Cremated remains can be buried or inurned in:
- A VA national cemetery (e.g., Tahoma National Cemetery, Willamette National Cemetery)
- A participating state veterans cemetery
This includes a marker, grave liner (if needed), and perpetual care—at no cost to the family. Spouses and certain dependents may also be eligible for interment in the same cemetery.
How Western Cremation Alliance Helps
We help you:
- Obtain and file the necessary forms
- Request military honors and the burial flag
- Coordinate with veterans cemeteries for inurnment of ashes
- Provide guidance on paperwork and eligibility, even if cremation is already complete
These services are offered at no extra charge as part of our commitment to honoring veterans.
