Douglas Fraser Smith, 90 Years, of Gig Harbor, WA
09/24/1928 – 07/01/2019
Douglas Fraser “Smitty” Smith, 90, passed away Monday, July 1, 2019 at his home in Gig Harbor, Washington, following a brief illness.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, Jean (Long) Smith; his sons, David Smith (and wife Holly), and Douglas Jr. (and wife Susan); grandchildren Liza Ottovich and Laura Smith; and many close friends.
Smitty, as he was known for most of his adult life, was born in Fresno, California and raised in southern California and, for a time, in southeast Asia. He served 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, then transitioned to a career as a safety engineer in heavy construction, refinery operations and military base operations, with many postings across the United States.
Over his lifetime he pursued a series of passions, from auto racing to bridge, and he enjoyed many travels with his wife Jean, known to most as Freddie; among his fondest memories were ocean cruises, and trips to Hawaii, with friends.
A decades-long resident of Alameda, California, he was an active Mason and member of the Presbyterian Church; he and Freddie held a longtime membership at Encinal Yacht Club. Smitty relocated to Gig Harbor in 2017 to be near his younger son.
A private service will be held presently, and his ashes will be scattered, according to his wishes, at sea.

We surely enjoyed knowing Smitty and Freddie during their Kemmerer, WY years, as well
as being neighbors to Laurie in Alameda. Semper Fi. The Kinders in Rock Springs.
